In one of the Passion Project seminars a few years ago, I talked about the people who you should never turn your back on. Ever! No matter what happens in the relationship, work it out and move on with them because you need those people in your life.
This goes to anyone who you can confidently call at 3:00 am and say I need to go to the hospital and the only response is “I’ll be there in 10:00 minutes”... Anyone who you can call from jail and they say “how much is the bail?”... Anyone you can go without speaking to for months or even years, and the moment you reconnect the conversation picks up where it left off and you’re totally trusting of each other. These are people you don’t walk away from.
In addition to these backbone people, you need what I call supporters. One is a truth teller – someone whose sole purpose is to bring you back to reality. You know when you have these spectacular ideas to do some crazy thing and you ask them for advice, this person is not going to just tell you what you want to hear. They’re going to lay it on you in bare bones honesty and give you a different perspective to think about.
You also need a good mentor – preferably someone a few years older who has been where you’ve been and who can offer constructive advice and opinions on a range of issues from personal to professional that will guide you in the right direction. Sometimes your mentor can be younger too, nothing’s wrong with that. It’s really about the expertise one can offer from their own life experience that you can build on for your growth and development.
With these people in your circle, your chances of success increases exponentially! And when you have that kind of support it makes you stronger and more driven to move aggressively towards your goals.
